What is AI Overviews?
Google AI Overviews
Quick Answer
AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries Google shows above classic results for questions where a synthesised answer adds something, with links to the pages that support it. There are no special requirements to appear in one — eligibility is ordinary indexing plus snippet eligibility.
In Detail
Understanding AI Overviews
Google builds them by retrieving pages from its normal Search index and grounding the generated answer in them, often using a 'query fan-out' — issuing several related searches across subtopics at once, which surfaces a wider and more varied set of source links than a single classic query would.
Google is explicit that no new markup, file or optimisation technique is required: no llms.txt, no special schema, no AI-specific rewriting. The controls that exist are the standard preview controls — nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet — plus noindex.
Business Impact
Why AI Overviews Matters
It changes what wins visibility. Definitional and explanatory content — the kind that answers a question cleanly and can be quoted with attribution — surfaces more readily than pages built to rank for a keyword.
Reporting is easy to misread: impressions from AI features are counted inside the ordinary 'Web' search type in Search Console, not as a separate additive channel.
From Our Own Book
How ATIL Works With AI Overviews
We track this on our own domain rather than theorising about it. Over a recent three-month window atil.ltd recorded 824 impressions in Google's generative AI features across 149 pages, rising from roughly 3 a day to around 30.
The instructive part: after the homepage, our single best-performing page was a glossary definition — one explainer entry outperformed every blog post and every programmatic location page. That is the clearest evidence we have for where AI features actually source from.
Figures are drawn from ATIL's managed portfolio and measured through platform APIs, not estimated.
